A straightforward workflow
How to edit a PDF online
Keep the original, make a focused change, and check the saved document. A quick edit is still worth a careful final look.
- 01
Choose the PDF you want to edit
Click Choose a PDF file or drag a PDF into the editor. The current limits are 60 MB and 300 pages. Confirm that you have opened the right version before adding anything.
- 02
Make your changes on the page
Use Text, Images, Sign, Forms, Annotate or Shapes for the task in front of you. Move and resize your additions, use Undo if needed, and check the active page before continuing.
- 03
Apply, download and check
Select Apply changes and download. When the result is ready, choose Download PDF to save it. Open the saved file in a PDF reader and check the changed pages. Your original file is not overwritten.
The tools for a useful edit
More ways to finish your PDF in one place
Choose the control that fits your task. You can work on a small addition or combine several changes before exporting.
Text and visual corrections
Add a text box, adjust its font, size, colour and bold setting, or select an available text line to revise its visible appearance. Review the replacement carefully before saving.
Images and signatures
Place a picture on the page and resize it. For a signature, draw it, type your name or choose an image, then move the result into position.
Highlights and drawing
Highlight, underline or strike through a passage. Use the pen for a freehand mark, or add a rectangle, ellipse, line or arrow to direct attention.
Fillable form fields
Add text fields, multi-line fields, checkboxes, radio buttons or a dropdown list. Test the exported fields in the PDF reader your recipients will use.
Useful clickable links
Draw a link area for a website, email address, phone number or page within the document. Check the destination after downloading the file.
Page controls and Undo
Navigate and zoom, rotate a page, remove an unwanted page or insert a blank one. Undo, Redo and keyboard shortcuts help you adjust the edit as you go.

Small changes, useful context
Add text, pictures and a signature where they belong
A document may only need a short addition: a date beside a field, a reference number or a note for the next reader. Use the Text tool to place it, then adjust the size and colour so it is easy to read.
Images and signatures can be positioned on the page too. A drawn, typed or uploaded signature is a visible mark; it is not the same as signing with a digital certificate. Keep enough space around every addition so the page stays readable.
- Place notes close to the information they explain.
- Keep text clear of totals, names and important page details.
- Check how the addition looks in the exported file.
Know your document
Revise visible text, with the original structure in mind
Use Text and select a recognised line when you want to change its visible wording. The editor prepares a text box, covers the original area and draws your revised text in its place. It is a visual replacement rather than a full rewrite of the original text objects.
That distinction matters. The underlying original text may remain in the PDF, so do not use this method to remove private information. It may also look different on a coloured background or when the original font is unavailable.
For a long rewrite, work from the original source file where possible. If you only have a text-based PDF, PDF to Word offers another route. A fully scanned page needs an appropriate OCR workflow before its words can be edited as text.
The Text language selector helps the reader handle difficult extracted lines, including Hindi and English. Read again uses the browser text reader; recognition can still make mistakes. Check the words before accepting them.

The details make the difference
Keep the finished document easy to read
At high zoom, a text box can look neatly placed while feeling cramped on a normal-sized page. Review the document at a regular reading size as well as close up.
Watch for shifted line breaks, a substitute font, cropped text and changes to the page order. These are especially easy to miss in tables, invoices and forms with tightly spaced fields.
- Compare the changed page with your original.
- Read every name, date and amount you touched.
- Open the downloaded PDF, not just the preview.
Everyday document tasks
Start with the job you need to finish
The right workflow depends on whether you are adding context, revising the source text or preparing pages for someone else.
Feedback on a draft
A short annotation can explain a requested change without rebuilding the document. Make it clear whether the note is feedback or part of the final copy.
A reusable form
Add fillable fields for information you collect regularly. Use clear names and sensible options, then test text fields, checkboxes and dropdowns in the downloaded PDF.
Study notes and handouts
Keep personal notes separate from the original wording. If you share a marked-up document, make it easy for the reader to tell your additions from the source.
Editing a document for someone else? Make sure you have permission. Keep a copy of the original and use a file name that makes the revised version easy to recognise.
Choose the right approach
Not every PDF change is the same kind of edit
A different task may need a different tool. Knowing that before you start can save a lot of trial and error.
| What you want to do | What to look for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Add a date or short note | Text tool | The new text is placed on the page. Keep it clear of existing details. |
| Correct a visible line | Text tool on recognised text | The original area is covered and new text is drawn over it. This is not secure removal of the original. |
| Read difficult extracted text | Text language and Read again | Check recognition results. This does not make every image-only PDF fully editable. |
| Remove confidential information | A dedicated permanent-redaction workflow | Whiteout and visual text replacement can leave original content inside the PDF. |
| Create a reusable form | Forms menu | Add the right field type, export, and test it in a PDF reader. |
One last look
Before you send the edited PDF
Think of the downloaded file as the final document. It should make sense without the editing screen beside it.
- Reopen the saved PDF in a reader.
- Check the edited pages at normal zoom.
- Confirm names, dates, totals and reference numbers.
- Check that the page count and order are correct.
- Inspect links and form fields you need to keep.
- Keep the original and use a clear name for the new copy.
Working with a signed document? Edits can affect an existing digital signature. Keep the signed original and check what changes the document permits before saving a revised version.
Understand the processing
Browser editing, with a separate choice for AI reading
The PDF-loading, editing and export workflow runs in your browser. You can work on a copy without overwriting the original on your device.
Ordinary editing
The editor reads the selected PDF and builds the edited output in browser memory. The page also loads software libraries and fonts from external services, so browser processing is not a promise of fully offline use.
Optional AI text reading
The AI control for a selected text line sends an image of that line to the site's online AI service. Leave it unused if you do not want that image sent for processing. Ordinary Read again uses the browser OCR reader instead.
Your final check
Review recognised words, form behaviour and the downloaded copy. For documents containing confidential information, read the privacy policy and your organisation's rules before using an online feature.
A few useful answers
Questions about editing PDFs online
Text editing, scanned pages, privacy and saving your changes, explained without the jargon.
Is Edit PDF Online free to use?The live page currently lists this tool as free and says it works without a paid subscription. The editor accepts a PDF up to 60 MB and 300 pages. Check the page for any later change to access or limits.
What can I add to a PDF?You can add text, images, visible signatures, links, drawing marks, shapes and fillable form fields. The form options include text and multi-line fields, checkboxes, radio buttons and dropdown lists.
Can I change text already on a page? You can select a recognised line through the Text tool and revise its visible appearance. The implementation covers the original area and draws the replacement over it. The original text may remain in the file, so this is not permanent redaction.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?You can add text and other objects over a scanned page. Editing the words in a page image is a different task. The built-in reader assists with difficult extracted lines; do not assume it provides a complete OCR conversion of every image-only PDF.
Does the PDF stay on my device?Ordinary loading, editing and export are performed in the browser. The optional AI control sends a selected line image to an online service to read its text. The editor also loads external libraries and fonts. Read the privacy policy before working with sensitive material.
What is the difference between Read again and AI?Read again uses the browser OCR reader and your Text language setting. The AI control sends an image of the selected line for online transcription. Neither result should be accepted without checking names, numbers and punctuation.
Can I add a signature?Yes. The signature panel lets you draw a signature, type your name or upload a signature image. You can place and resize the result. This creates a visual signature mark, not a certificate-based digital signature.
Can I make a PDF form fillable? The Forms menu lets you add several interactive field types. Export a test copy and open it in the PDF reader your recipients use to check that the fields behave as you expect.
Does Whiteout permanently delete text? No. Whiteout places a white shape over part of the page. The hidden content can remain in the PDF. Use a dedicated permanent-redaction workflow for information that must actually be removed.
What are the file and page limits? The current editor checks for a maximum of 60 MB and 300 pages. A file within those limits can still be demanding on a phone or an older computer, especially if it contains detailed scans or many images.
Can I open a password-protected PDF here? The current editor rejects locked or encrypted PDFs and asks for an unlocked copy. Use a copy you are authorised to edit. If you do not have access, ask the document owner for a suitable file.
Why does my replacement text look different?A replacement font may differ from the original. Some text is drawn into the exported PDF as an image when needed for rendering. Check appearance, readability and text selection in the final file rather than assuming that every font and text property is preserved.
How do I save the edited PDF?Click Apply changes and download. Once the result is ready, use Download PDF. Keep editing returns you to the same document, while Edit another PDF starts a new one. The original file on your device is not overwritten.
Can editing affect an existing digital signature?Yes, edits can affect signature validity. Keep the signed original, check what modifications it permits and inspect its signature status after any allowed change. A newly placed signature image does not restore an earlier certificate signature.
