The current workspace accepts one ZIP up to 128 MB, at most 3,000 entries, no more than 256 MB expanded data, and a 200x expansion-ratio cap. You can choose Fast, Balanced, or Ultra compression before creating the 7Z.

The ZIP to 7Z tool takes the files and folders stored inside a .zip archive and repacks them in the 7Z format using LZMA compression. The goal is a more compact archive while keeping the existing contents together.

Compression results vary. A collection of text documents or source files may shrink noticeably, while photographs, videos, PDFs, and other compressed data may show a much smaller difference.

The tool accepts ZIP input only.

Watch for this

You can upload only a .zip file. Before sharing the result, confirm that the recipient can open 7Z archives. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes basic 7Z support, but older Windows versions and some other setups may still require 7-Zip or another compatible archive manager.

ZIP and 7Z compress the same files in different ways

Converting an archive doesn't change the documents, images, code, or folders stored inside it. The converter extracts the ZIP entries and then places those same entries into a new 7Z container.

The main change is the compression method. ZIP commonly uses the DEFLATE algorithm, while this converter creates the 7Z archive with LZMA compression.

LZMA can find and compress repeated patterns effectively, especially across collections containing similar text or source files. In suitable cases, the resulting archive may be 30–70% smaller than the original ZIP, but that range isn't a promise for every file.

The contents decide how much space you save

Why can two ZIP files produce very different results? Compression depends on the data inside them, not just the original archive's filename or size.

Plain text, logs, code, spreadsheets, and related documents often contain repeated patterns that a strong compressor can reduce. A folder containing many similar files may therefore benefit more than a folder filled with unrelated media.

JPEG images, MP4 videos, many audio formats, and some PDFs are already compressed. Repacking them with LZMA may save little space because much of the easy redundancy was removed when those files were created.

Always compare the output. The only reliable measurement for your archive is the size of the downloaded 7Z file beside the size of its source ZIP.

Good to know

Use 7Z when reducing storage or transfer size matters and the recipient has compatible software. Keep ZIP when easy opening across mixed devices matters more than squeezing the archive further. The smaller format isn't automatically the better delivery format.

The conversion happens in three local stages

First, select a valid .zip archive from your device. The page reads that file locally and accesses the entries stored inside it.

Next, the converter repacks those files and folders into a new 7Z archive. LZMA compression is applied during this stage to reduce the amount of storage used where the data allows it.

Once processing finishes, download the .7z result.

Your existing files don't become different formats

A PNG stored inside the ZIP remains a PNG after conversion. The same is true for documents, videos, executables, source files, and every other item in the archive.

The tool changes the outer package rather than converting each contained file. It also isn't designed to optimize an image, rewrite a PDF, or change a program so it works on another operating system.

Folder paths remain part of the repacked collection. If your ZIP contains project/assets/logo.png, the converter should keep that nested organization in the 7Z output instead of moving everything to the top level.

Example

Suppose source-files.zip contains hundreds of related code and text files and must be stored in a limited cloud folder. Convert it to 7Z, download the result, and compare both sizes. If the 7Z is meaningfully smaller and everyone who needs it can open it, the format change has a practical benefit.

Better compression comes with a compatibility cost

ZIP remains widely recognized because it opens easily across browsers, desktop systems, phones, and common file managers. That broad support makes it a safer choice when you don't know what device the recipient uses.

7Z support is less consistent. The free 7-Zip application is a common option, and other archive managers can read the format, but not every device or managed workplace computer has a compatible tool installed.

Windows compatibility also depends on version. Windows 11 version 24H2 supports 7Z archives in File Explorer, while older versions may need separate software.

Ask before sending. Saving space isn't useful if the person receiving the archive can't open it or isn't permitted to install an archive manager.

Keep ZIP for broad sharing and use 7Z selectively

A 7Z file can make sense for your own backups, long-term storage, developer handoffs, or transfers between people who already use compatible software. In these cases, compression efficiency may matter more than universal convenience.

ZIP is often the safer choice for job applications, client deliveries, school portals, email attachments, and public downloads unless the destination explicitly accepts 7Z. Many upload forms list allowed extensions and will reject an unsupported archive even if its contents are harmless.

Don't decide by size alone. Check the destination's file rules, the recipient's software, and the value of the actual reduction before replacing the more familiar ZIP version.

Local processing keeps the archive on your device

You can use the core workflow without signing in or creating an account.

Local processing still uses your computer's memory and processor. Large archives, thousands of small entries, or limited device resources may make the browser tab slower while LZMA compression is running.

Keep the tab open until the download is ready.

Large archives may take time to recompress

Creating a 7Z archive is more than changing the extension. The original ZIP has to be read, its entries have to be handled, and a new compressed archive has to be built.

LZMA's stronger compression can require more processing work than a basic archive operation. The exact time depends on the archive size, file count, content types, and the device running your browser.

A modern desktop may process a project archive comfortably, while an older phone or a low-memory laptop may struggle with the same job. If the tab becomes unstable, try a smaller archive or use installed desktop software with more control over resources.

A smaller archive isn't proof that every file is intact

After downloading, open the 7Z and inspect its directory tree. Check a few important files rather than assuming that a completed progress message is enough for an important backup or delivery.

Keep the original ZIP until the new archive has been tested. If you delete the source immediately and later find a damaged or incomplete result, you remove the easiest recovery option.

For valuable data, compare the expected file count and folder layout. Extracting the 7Z into a temporary folder is a practical final check before moving it to long-term storage.

Problems can begin with the source ZIP

The converter can't repair an archive that was already corrupted, incomplete, or incorrectly named. Open the source ZIP first if you aren't certain that it contains readable data.

A file ending in .zip isn't necessarily a valid ZIP archive. Renaming another format changes its filename but doesn't rebuild its internal structure.

Password-protected files require special handling, yet this interface doesn't include a password field. If the source ZIP is encrypted, use appropriate archive software to access or prepare it before attempting this conversion.

Choose 7Z only when the trade-off works

This tool gives you a direct way to convert ZIP to 7Z with LZMA compression while keeping the work on your device. It can reduce storage use substantially for suitable content, but the exact saving depends on what's inside.

The deciding factor isn't compression alone. You also need to know whether the destination accepts 7Z and whether every intended recipient can open the archive.

Run the conversion, compare both file sizes, and verify the downloaded contents. Keep whichever format gives you the better balance of storage, compatibility, and convenience for that specific transfer.
