The second company handles far more sales for the same gross profit. So, a small rise in supplier costs could remove much of its thin margin.
Worked Example: A Leather Bag Workshop
Suppose you sell 75 custom leather bags at ₹2,000 each. Your monthly revenue is ₹1,50,000.
The bags need ₹45,000 of leather, ₹9,000 of zippers and hardware, and ₹6,000 of dust bags. Direct crafting labour adds ₹15,000. Total COGS is ₹75,000.

Inbound and Outbound Shipping Need Separate Treatment
Inbound shipping moves stock from a supplier to your facility. Because you need the goods before you can sell them, freight-in counts as COGS in this calculation.
Outbound shipping moves an order from your business to the customer. It is usually an operating expense or offset against shipping fees paid by the customer.

Overhead Doesn't Belong in This Calculation
Office rent, admin salaries, legal fees, general insurance, software tools, and broad ad campaigns aren't direct product costs here. They are operating expenses.
Putting overhead into COGS makes gross margin look too low. By contrast, leaving out a real production cost makes the result look too high.

Gross Profit and Net Profit Answer Different Questions
Gross profit shows what remains after direct product or delivery costs. Net profit shows what remains after every expense has been paid.
Gross isn't net.

Is a 40% gross margin good? It depends on the industry. Materials, labour, stock risk, and delivery costs vary widely between sectors.

Across all industries, Vena reports a broad average gross margin of around 36.5%. But forcing every business toward that combined number can mislead you.
A retailer chasing an 80% software-style margin may price itself out of the market. Meanwhile, a digital agency sitting at 20% may have room to improve.
